Oops! Accidental deployment with UPDATE Well like almost everyone else I wondered if it is possible to re-pack this ladder after it has been deployed (like so you can practice).Well I guess I will find out because mine deployed accidentally while I was hanging it up in my closet.I will post an update laterUPDATE: Amazon is amazing. They are replacing my ladder. It does appear that the ladder can be re-packed, but not with a lot of confidence. I did not practice with it because at my age, I don't like the risk/benefit ratio over a concrete driveway. I don't mind not being able to practice with it; in an emergency I'm sure we will manage. If you really want to practice, I would recommend buying 2. At $48 each it would be worth giving you peace of mind. If you don't like it on the practice run just return the second one for a refund. 4Well worth the price for having added safety device in case of a fire I bought two of these for added peace of mind. I have 3 children and all of our bedrooms are up 3 floors from the ground with no roofing in between for an escape in the event of a house fire. I hope never to need it, but I m extremely happy we have them in our rooms if we need them. My children are all too young or small to be able to lift and set up these ladders independently unfortunately, but I know that in the next few years my oldest should be capable of using this herself If needed. In the meantime, we do have an escape plan in place on how we would evacuate our kids. I also purchased a rapid baby evacuation device bag which zippers closed and is attached to a long tether so that I could get my baby and toddler out quickly and safely. It is rated up to 75 lbs and I highly recommend other parents to purchase this also if you have small children. Looks to be a good and sturdy device. Did not open up Incase could not fold back up. 5Good buy. Yes it's good. Worth the money. Buy it. 5Safety is paramount. As a firefighter this was one of the first things we purchased after we moved into our 2 story house. There is simply no reason not to invest in something so cheap that can save your life. Lord willing you will not need this device but you do not want to be in the position of needing it and not having it. I recommend at least 1 in the upstairs of your housing unit in a place that is easy to get to. This ladder is well made and easy to deploy if necessary so that even kids can do it if left at home and the worst happens. I would certainly recommend this product to others. 5A worthwhile purchase The ladder opens up & folds back in really easily. I put it in an open plastic container & slid it under my bed for storage (which is awesome, because finding a place to put stuff is always half the battle in my small apartment.)The instructions say it's a "one time use", but it seems really sturdy. I hope to never have to use it, but feel comforted having it around. 5Great addition to your fire plan! If you would like some additional info or photo's please comment and I'll update the review with any new info I canThis is a good piece of Equipment to have as part of your fire plan. Just make sure you buy the proper length for the home.I like to have this prepped and ready to go next to the fire masks at all times.Ideally having them in each bedroom where someone sleeps with a firemask would be preferred. This way if there is an emergency their escape doesn't require opening doors and/or navigating dangerous hallways.A possible solution is to have a tote, with a mask, a blanket, a gallon of water and a ladder in it. This way your loved ones have a "fire kit". They can use the water to wet a blanket and either place under the door or wear over their shoulders. They have the mask for smoke and the ladder to escape.Having the ladder is great but what if it's not accessible to you or your loved one because they're separated by the fire or smoke? It's just part of your family fire plan. 5If you have a two story, get one and don't experience a bad or sad story in a fire! We got this to stay current with getting down from the second floor bedroom in a fire. Now at mid 60's, we don't want to have to jump out and hit the ground as we would probably fracture a hip or break a leg. If you have multiple rooms and kids on the second floor bedrooms, get one for each bedroom. When you get them do not activate the ladder unless you are going to use it..... it takes a while to put back into the correct way! Don't forget, 1 all purpose fire extinguisher per room per floor... 4Works in and emergency, noted damage to house siding when practicing As September is Disaster Preparedness month, I though it would be wise to practice going up and down the ladder with the family. As it is primarily for the kids end of the house, the kids, ranging in age from 18 (190lbs) to 11 (90lbs) practiced climbing up and down. Yes, its a bit wobbly, yes,it works. Important note (and the reason for the 4 stars vs 5 stars)! As the picture shows, the metal edges of the steps are sharp, and will dig into the side of your house as people go down, causing damage to the paint and puncture marks in the siding of the house. Additionally, one of the red caps at the hook (windowsill) end of the ladder came off while we were practicing, gouging the finish below the windowsill. Yes, the ladder will work in an emergency, however, beware, when you practice (and do practice), the ladder will cause damage to the side of your house. 4Poor hook design. Poor hinge design. Should allow for testing but is stated single use. Poor design of portion that hooks over window sill. The red end caps are very loose, and came off in a test of the assembly hanging over the window sill. This seems treacherous as the tips of the bars need to engage the window trim or sill or the ladder may fail to hold to the window. The poor connection of the grapple mechanism to the specific window I tested is a fundamental failure. A carabiner harness accessory should be available so that a lag bolted harness could attach to a wall stud and the carabiner used to secure the ladder at the window. The folding hinge should have a lock mechanism so when it opens it locks in the open position. Steps deployed easily. Was able to refold the steps relatively easily. Should come with a storage bag. The instructions state: "Warning: Kidde Escape Ladders are designed for one-time use only. Discard after single use. Repeat use may result in injury or death." It is important to be able to train with a safety ladder and these instructions prevent training unless a duplicate product is purchased. I will check out the X-IT Fire Escape Ladder next. 1Could save a life if you live in a two-story house! A family in our community recently died because they could not get out of their two story home. My husband is a firefighter and was one of the ones to find the family huddled beside the upstairs window. It was one of the saddest things ever. It was a mom and a dad and two kids. The stairwell in their home had burned up and they couldn't get out. If they had had a fire ladder they might have lived. After my husband got home from that call he ordered one of these on Amazon immediately. We recently moved to a two-story home and had not bought one yet. It is not worth risking it. We actually plan on buying another one to have on both sides of the house upstairs just in case we can't get to one. The only other thing I thought about that this latter would not solve is the issue of having small children. Obviously adults could easily climb down this ladder out of a window but toddlers or babies could not. I actually thought about tying ropes to a laundry basket and sticking it in a closet because if I was home alone and my husband was not there and I had two kids at home, I would have no way of getting them down a ladder by myself. But I could stick my baby in a laundry basket and lower him down with rope. That may sound crazy but it's probably what I would have to do in case of an emergency if I was by myself with my kids. Just an idea for other mamas with small children. So grateful they make a product like this to keep families safe! 5
